Here, you will find details about the National Curriculum for maths and how we integrate maths into our learning at Anston Hillcrest Primary School.

Our Goals
At Anston Hillcrest, from the very start in EYFS through to KS1 and KS2, our maths curriculum nurtures confident, curious, and resilient mathematicians. Using the White Rose Maths Scheme, we provide a structured, mastery-based approach to deepen mathematical understanding through fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving. In EYFS, children begin by exploring foundational concepts in playful, practical ways, building skills that underpin later learning. Across all stages, we focus on small, manageable steps to develop strong foundations, empowering children to apply their skills to real-world situations and future learning with confidence and success.

Why?

Enhancing children's mathematical skills, critical thinking, and curiosity through a structured maths curriculum not only enriches their educational experience but also equips them with essential skills for success both in school and beyond. Developing problem-solving abilities, confidence, and a strong foundation in mathematical concepts is vital to children's holistic development, and our maths curriculum provides the framework for this growth. Through engaging and hands-on learning experiences, children gain the ability to apply their mathematical knowledge to real-world situations, developing a love for learning and preparing them for future opportunities in an increasingly complex world.
Our Maths Curriculum

At Anston Hillcrest, our EYFS maths plans break down the children's learning term by term. Mathematical subject knowledge and skills are then built on as children move seamlessly into Year 1. Once children move into KS1 we teach maths predominantly using the White Rose Scheme, which in many instances gives our children the chance to learn through the concrete and pictorial approaches, before moving onto more abstract variations, problems and investigations. There are a range of problems for them to solve, covering the broad curriculum and this is supplemented by additional learning for any children, who have not grasped a particular key concept and, by additional materials for those requiring problems to be solved in greater depth. We use NumberSense in Key Stage 1 and for some of our children in Key Stage 2, to promote basic understanding of number. Because we recognise that the blocks of maths are often not revisited for lengths of time, often around one year, Maths Meetings are used to keep maths fresh (whether this be factual knowledge or simple problem-solving skills). These meetings are taught from Y3 upwards, for 3 to 5 short sessions per week.

Our maths curriculum is enhanced through use of NRICH resources, which we use to stretch and challenge children as they move through the programmes of study.

We also enjoy using Times Table Rockstars as a means for developing fluency and recall of multiplication and division facts. Identified children are rewarded in weekly assemblies for their use of TTR.

Adaptations

The maths curriculum at Anston Hillcrest for disadvantaged children, including those with SEND is adapted using concrete resources like manipulatives, number lines, and visual aids to support understanding. Hands-on activities, such as sorting objects and using counters, enhance engagement with mathematical concepts.
Visual prompts, simplified instructions, and interactive games develop collaboration and participation, ensuring all children can develop essential maths skills in an inclusive environment.
