Here, you will find details about the National Curriculum for modern foreign languages and how we integrate, our chosen language, Spanish into our learning journeys at Anston Hillcrest Primary School.

Our Goals
At Anston Hillcrest, through our Spanish curriculum, we aim to inspire a love for language learning and cultural exploration. Our structured curriculum equips children with the skills to communicate confidently in a new language while developing an appreciation for Spanish-speaking cultures. We focus on developing listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, encouraging curiosity and global awareness.

Why?

Enhancing children's linguistic skills, cultural awareness, and curiosity through a structured Spanish curriculum not only enriches their educational experience but also equips them with essential skills for success both in school and beyond. Developing communication skills, confidence, and an appreciation for other cultures is vital to children's holistic development, and our Spanish curriculum provides the foundation for this growth. Through our curriculum, children gain the ability to express themselves in a new language, developing greater global awareness and opening doors to future opportunities.

Teaching Spanish also supports the transition of our children to Wales High School. We work in collaboration with their language department to ensure our children can transition seamlessly into their KS3 modern foreign language journey.

Our Spanish Curriculum
Spanish at Anston Hillcrest Primary is taught through engaging thematic units that develop linguistic skills, cultural awareness, and a love for languages.
Our MFL is taught through thematic units, showing the progression of language skills and objectives across the school. Our children build their confidence in speaking, listening, reading, and writing in Spanish, while also learning about Spanish-speaking cultures.

Adaptations

At Anston Hillcrest, our Spanish curriculum for disadvantaged children, including those with SEND is adapted through the use of visual aids, interactive games, and multisensory activities.
Flashcards and song-based learning enhance vocabulary retention. Hands-on activities, such as role-playing everyday scenarios and using props, engage children in practical language use. Simplified instructions and visual prompts support understanding, ensuring all children can participate in learning Spanish effectively.
